Season 2003/04

Nationwide Conference

Farnborough Town 4
Aldershot Town 0
24th January 2004
After an even first half with a great penalty save from Osborn and a goal from Charles Farnborough cut loose in the second half and wiped the floor with them. Sweet!

1st January 2004
The Satanage Scum got some revenge with the help of the officials. They raised into a 2 goal lead before Hodgson brought us back into the game with a penalty blasted straight down the middle. Harkness then headed home to bring the game level as the home side failed to hold onto a lead. After the first 10 minutes we dominated the game and once level there was only going to be one winner, that was until the referee made a poor decision in sending Thompson off. With just 10 men our part-timed players couldn't keep up with the pace of the game and a Charles own goal gave Stevenage a lucky win.

Ha ha ha ha! Take that Chipmunk and all you little friends. We outplayed the old boys and got a deserved win.
Barnet 0
Farnborough Town 2
20th December 2003
A good performance saw us get our first away win of the season. Another goal from Nick Burton gave us the lead going into the break. At times it was required goal line clearances but a late goal from Ryan Semple lifted the pressure in the dying seconds and gave us a deserved win. For a change our old boys in this game, Pitcher and Tags, failed to cause us any problems.

Farnborough Town 1
Margate 1
6th December 2003
A disappointing performance and only a single point snatched late on with a great headed goal from Nick Burton. We had the chances to win this game fairly easily but didn't take them and generally put in a poor performance. Lenny Piper scored Margate's goal in his first return to the club.
Hereford Town 2
Farnborough Town 0
29th November 2003
A good performance against one of the promotion favourites failed to prevent another away defeat. The 2 nil defeat flattered Hereford a little but the Farnborough side still needs to re-learn the art of goal scoring. Similar performances in the forthcoming home games must surely result in victories.

We won!!!! Screamer from Adie Hayes gave us (finally) a very deserved first three points.
Accrington Stanley 3
Farnborough Town 1

11th October 2003

Nothing too much to complain about this one, we just weren't good enough. Stanley took an early lead whilst a changed Farnborough side tried to settle and extended it later in the first half. "Billy" Beale scored an excellent goal perfectly looping the ball over their keeper to reduce the deficit before half time. Unfortunately in the second half Ken Charlery, playing the back, was sent off for a second bookable offence after a Stanley ran into his outstretched arm. Bookable offence? Possibly, but a bit harsh. Stanley wrapped up the game with a penalty for obstruction, again a harsh decision that are sometime given sometime not. We generated chances during the game but didn't make the best of them and didn't defend well enough. The referee whilst not great was probably the best we've seen this season.
I found Accrington Stanley strangely unfriendly, especially for a club in Lancashire. Beer at 'southern' prices, well above our social club, poor food, poor stewarding and kids who spit on away fans.

13th September 2003

A better performance from the team even if they were let down by some of the supporters. Played well in the first half but after the break got caught out with two cracking shots and a dodgy goal. However Charlery and Hodgson came off the bench and each picked up a goal at the depth. If the match was another ten minutes longer we could have got something out of the game.

9th August 2003, 3.00pm
The opening game of a brand new season was fought under the blazing sun. Our new look side struggled for form in the first half and the midfield rarely made it's presence felt. A defensive error meant that Scarborough went in at halftime with a one nil lead. Some changes in the second half worked and we looked a better side causing Scarborough some trouble before Ken equalised. Unfortunately a late penalty gave all three points to Scarborough. The game however was overshadowed by some harsh and sometimes bewildering decisions from the men in charge. Burton was sent off as last man despite contact looking light and played for. What looked like a perfectly good equaliser was ruled out and Osborn saved the late penalty which the referee ordered to be retaken, TFFC footage seem to show it was a Scarborough player encroaching not a Farnborough player.

1st Round

Thame United 1
Farnborough Town 2

25th October 2003
4th Qualifying Round
The game was what you would expect considering the opposition and quality of the pitch, fairly poor. The recent HSC game at Horndean probably left the players in good stead for this fixture and Farnborough ground out a deserved win against the Ryman opposition. Goals from Clarke and Hayes gave us a comfortable lead and apart from the scare at the end and Belgraves stupid sending off was a professional if unspectacular performance.

FA Trophy

Canvey Island 6
Farnborough Town 0

10th January 2004

Canvey played very well and we played very poorly in a game the players were clearly not up for. Only decent performance came from Osborn who kept the score down with a number of excellent saves, including one from the spot.

Pre-season Friendlies

Farnborough Town 1
Brentford 3

2nd August 2003, 3.00pm
Another promising 'boro performance played out in the heat of the summer. Great goal from Barrington Belgrave in the second half.
Farnborough Town 0
Millwall 6

26th July 2003, 3.00pm
Our first half 11 did very well against a fairly strong Millwall team. Unfortunately a team made up mostly of trialists couldn't live with a very effective Millwall side.

Newport IoW 3
Farnborough Town 0

19th July 2003, 3.00pm

A Farnborough side the worse for wear living it playing Bingo on the Isle of White lost to a well organised Newport side, a good keeper help of course.

Met Police 1
Farnborough Town 1

15th July 2003, 7.30pm

A Farnborough team of mostly trialists got a 1-1 draw against a solid looking Met Police side featuring many Farnborough old boys.
Farnborough Town 0
QPR 0

12th July 2003, 3.00pm
An almost entirely new Farnborough squad played out a nil nil draw against league side QPR. A mostly first team squad was entirely replaced by trialists (plus Packham and Green) at half time. The result was a very promising performance and bodes well for the season.

Season 2002/03

FA Cup

Farnborough Town 1 Arsenal 5 - 25/01/2003 - Arsenal made the most of their one man advantage and scraped past us into the fifth round of the FA Cup. Whilst we didn't get the giant-killing performance we dreamed of the lads played well and kept up with The Arsenal for the entire 90 minutes. We held them at bay for 19 minutes, whilst we were down to ten men we lasted a full 45 minutes without conceding a goal and of course who can forget Rocky scoring! Lee showed his in-experience at the back (maybe someone should have told him that shirt holding isn't allowed) but Jeffers didn't help when he went over so easily. The Premiership referee was always going to side with Arsenal and we also got a couple of yellows and Jeffers got nothing despite trying to take Justin's head off. We kept the margin down to four and we scored against the best side in the country, and we did most of it with just 10 men. Yes it wasn't their full side but it wasn't far off it. No-one expected Campbell and Pires to be playing and to then bring on Edu, Bergkamp and Wiltord shows that Arsenal were serious. They all played well but I think Watson, who kept Viera in his pocket, and Annon were awesome, how many last ditch clearances did Darren make. At least we can now go back to standing on the terraces with fans who really care about the club.

Darlington 2 Farnborough Town 3 - 04/01/2003 - How good was that day out. They were all heroes every single one of them. Is this perhaps the greatest win in the club's history? until the next round at least :-) We went ahead twice in the first half thanks to Rocky and Danny Carroll only for Darlo to pull back each time. Boro had the best of the game, especially early on, but seemed vulnerable to Darlo's diagonal crosses. Graham changed things round in the second half to combat their attacks somewhat and when Danny Carroll hit home the winner Darlo weren't able to come back. Cue scenes of great rejoicing and a place in the fourth round draw.

Southport 0 Farnborough Town 3 - 07/12/2002 - A very convincing performance from the team put us through to the third round and a possible draw against a Premiership side.

Farnborough Town 5 Harrogate Town 1 - 16/11/2002 - Only the five goals this time as we go into the 2nd Round of the FA Cup, game over after 13 minutes.

Molesey 0 Farnborough Town 6 - 26/10/2002 - An easy win for Farnborough gets us into the 1st Round of the FA Cup, against Harrogate, and an extra £20k better off.

FA Trophy

Farnborough Town 1 Tamworth 2 - 15/03/2003 - And that was the end of the cup competitions, shame really as with Forest Green and Yeovil going out we would have had a genuine chance of going all of the way. Credit to Tamworth they were the better team on a day when Farnborough didn't really get going and rarely took hold of the game. Unexpected and very welcome return of Jim Rodwell in central defence.

Farnborough Town 2 Halifax Town 0 - 22/02/2003 - Another great win in the Trophy see's us power into the quarter finals. As usual Farnborough dominated the first half and spent the second half defending, helped by the fact that Halifax couldn't score if the game had gone on all night. But what about that haircut!

Telford United 2 Farnborough Town 3 - 01/02/2003 - Another turbulent week in the life of Farnborough Town. With Graham gone together with half our first team the remaining players set out to prove a point and win the game for themselves and us. And they did it in some style. IMHO we played some of the best football for years, the type of passing football we rarely saw under Graham Westley. We had many players out of position, Bunce failed a fitness test so we had Tags at left back and Chris P. at right back. Some better finishing and a decent referee could have resulted in a thrashing.

Eastbourne Borough 0 Farnborough Town 1 - 11/01/2003 - After a strange week it was back to proper non-league football down on (or near anyway) the southcoast. A poor pitch meant that we were back to Ryman type football with lots of high balls. Few chances to either side meant that the tie was won with a single goal from The Sun pinup boy Nathan Bunce after a poor clearance of a Taggart corner. We were just glad it didn't go to a replay.

Nationwide Conference

Nuneaton Borough 0 Farnborough Town 2 - 26/04/2003 - A fantastic day out for the last game of the 2002/3 season. Once Lenny put us ahead on the half hour mark the little fight Nuneaton shown vanished and Farnborough could play some entertaining football.

Farnborough Town 1 Gravesend & Northfleet 1 - 21/04/2003 - A strange game on Bank Holiday Monday saw us save (saving extreme results on the last day). An excilerating first half saw many chances for both sides. However a tactical change saw us seemingly chase the draw. The seemingly back fired with Gravesend nominating the second half and deservedly going ahead on 72 minutes. However a late equaliser eight minutes into injury time from Ken Charlery saw us nick a point and ensure another season of Conference football.

Margate 0 Farnborough Town 0 - 19/04/2003 - An extremely dull game which we almost pinched right at the death. A very valuable point though.

Farnborough Town 2 Morecambe 3 - 12/04/2003 - Ho hum, when we ever get a decent break. We fought back and equalised twice only to concede a late goal. I know that Christian Lee is fit but I do think our best defence is Tags, Rodwell, Annon and Chris Piper. Tags is a much better leftback that wingback and surely Stevenage after Christmas showed that Darren is not a leftback. To be honest Morecambe still look as promising a side as they did back in October, if they don't get through the playoffs this year I predict they will run the title close next season.

Kettering Town 1 Farnborough Town 4 - 05/04/2003 - Finally we get a league win and away too. After all the excellent performances the team has put in recently we got what we deserved and brought back three valuable points. Our first league win since stuffing Woking on Boxing Day and it was September 28th that we last won away (in the league that is). Geoff Pitcher made a surprise return from injury and with the exception of Mark Ayres we now have a fully fit squad. Two goals from Lenny Piper and much needed goals from Ken Charlery and Rocky Baptiste wrapped up a very solid performance against a team that looked doomed to relegation.

Farnborough Town 1 Chester City 2 - 29/03/2003 - How much bad luck can one side get? We fully deserved to come away from his game with at least one point but were denied that following a late Chester penalty after a Farnborough player handled the ball from a dodgy free-kick. A new 5-3-2 formation meant there were limited chances for both sides as we welcomed the return of Christian Lee. Whilst our equalising goal was a little on the scrappy side there was little to separate the sides and any neutral would have been surprised that Chester were chasing the play-offs whilst we were trying to pull away from the relegation zone.

Burton Albion 2 Farnborough Town 0 - 22/03/2003 - Our appalling away record continued up in sunny Burton. We never really convinced and created few good chances in front of goal.

Forest Green Rovers 3 Farnborough Town 1 - 08/03/2003 - A poor early defensive performance early on left too much to be done at wet and windy Forest Green. With Annon suspended and Lee on the bench a back four of Chris Piper, Reekes, Patterson and Tags wasn't up to a physical FGR frontline and thanks to some very good finishing they were 3 nil up very quickly. Christian Lee came on in the second half and made a great difference and Farnborough got more into the game getting a goal back through Harkness in the second half. Farnborough hit the woodwork twice and had a penalty appeal turned down but couldn't do enough to make up for the early defensive performance. In many ways we suffered from a small squad with poor Dean Green (who seemed on another planet despite getting a lot of the ball) and Lenny Piper still obviously carrying knocks.

Farnborough Town 2 Barnet 2 - 01/03/2003 - A hard fought game on a heavy wet pitch left us just one point better off after failing to capitalise on a series of good chances in the second half to put the game out of reach of Barnet and give us a league win which is now long overdue, we just don't seem to be getting the luck we deserve at the moment. Twice in the second half we went ahead thanks to Geoff Pitcher and Rocky Baptiste and twice Barnet equalised.

Farnborough Town 2 Yeovil Town 4 - 15/02/2003 - CHEATED! The linesman gave a penalty when everyone believed it was a corner. I've haven't spoken to anyone, Farnborough or Yeovil, who thought it was. The photo in the NLP also seems to bear it out. Unfortunately the referee bottled the decision and gave the penalty which changed the game. Until that point the gave was evenly contested with Butterworth cancelling out an early Yeovil goal with a stunning long range strike. After the penalty our heads dropped and Yeovil raised the game and the game was all but over. We may have lost despite the pen but it is now games running that we have conceded dodgy penalty's from weak referee's. Joff got a late goal to make the final scoreline look better and was the least we deserved. I really hope that Mr G Lewis and one of Brockwell and Henry went home proud of their work, it's not often that we get officials escorted off.

Dagenham & Redbridge 1 Farnborough Town 0 - 08/02/2003 - Ian McDonalds second game in charge and the third game in eight days for some tired players. A very close game was decided by a late penalty given to the home side. From our end this seemed to be a very soft decision from the referee and a bit of a gift to the home side. For the performance the players gave we deserved more. On loan signings Geoff Pitcher and Stuart Reeks made their debuts. Stuart seemed to put in a good performance alongside Darren and Geoff was excellent in midfield, a great signing IMHO, better than Watson or Carroll any day of the week.

Stevenage Borough 5 Farnborough Town 0 - 28/12/2002 - What more can be said other than the scoreline? Dicked.

Farnborough Town 5 Woking 0 - 26/12/2002 - What more can be said other than the scoreline? Dicked 'em.

Farnborough Town 2 Southport 1 - 14/12/2002 - A more workman like game compared to last week's excellent result in the FA Cup. Farnborough had the edge but failed to make many chances before Southport took the lead. Tags and Joff came on late in the game and a great goal from Joff put us level before Rocky got the winner from a goalmouth scramble in injury time.

Farnborough Town 5 Burton Albion 1 - 30/11/2002 - A near faultless performance from Farnborough made for a great preparation for next weeks big cup game. Burton Albion were obviously tired from their two hour replay against Oldham but that took nothing away from an excellent 'boro performance. Watson, Chris Piper, Justin Gregory, Rocky and Ken Charlery in particularly were excellent but the whole team made short work of Burton. A great game for our 200th Conference home game.

Farnborough Town 3 Northwich Victoria 2 - 23/11/2002 - Another lightening opening saw Farnborough 2 nil up in just seven minutes with goals from Rocky and Lenny. Northwich pulled a goal back before the most controversial moment of the game when Shaun Came handled the ball to stop it crossing the line. Came was rightly sent off but the referee gave the penalty which Rocky hit wide. Ten man Northwich fought back in the second half and it looked as though the three points had gone when the equalised in the 79th minute. Right at the death though Rocky got the deserved winner, although Northwich claimed the ball hadn't crossed the line. A good performance overall and we could and should have had more if we had some better finishing and a little more luck.

Gravesend & Northfleet 0 Farnborough Town 0 - 09/11/2002 - Farnborough put in a much better performance to win a point. Neither side was able to make the breakthrough in a fairly even game although the always outstanding Tony Pennock kept us in it on a few occasions. Graham brought Rocky on late on and moved Lenny back into midfield, after this we played much better and could have stolen all three points with some better finishing. A draw was probably the best result. But what was it with the policing, I counted at least 12 coppers in addition to their stewards and ours.

Farnborough Town 0 Nuneaton Borough 2 - 02/11/2002 - Farnborough slip to yet another defeat against a lower placed team with a lifeless performance in the rain. Rocky Baptiste and Christian Lee failed to cause much trouble to the visiting defence despite a decent amount of possession, the performance improved after the introduction of Lenny and Dean late on but by then the damage had been done.

Morecambe 1 Farnborough Town 1 - 19/10/2002 - A generally entertaining game against the team furthest away from us. This turned out to be a game of two goalkeepers as Tony Pennock was excellent with a series of top class saves and Morecombes keeper managed to keep out Lenny who could have had a hatfull. Without these two we could easily have had at least seven or eight goals. Steve Watson drilled home the equaliser late in the game to snatch a deserved point after Morecambe went ahead from a freekick in the second half.

Farnborough Town 0 Kettering Town 1 - 12/10/2002 - What is it with us when playing bottom of the league teams? Not enough creative spark to get past their packed defence. After Tuesday's second half demolition of Margate we hoping for a lot more. Hopefully Morecambe away next Saturday will more to the team's liking.

Farnborough Town 1 Leigh RMI 0 - 21/09/2002 - A slightly better performance against Leigh than against Scarborough last week (but then that's hardly difficult). We defended well and passed the ball about with threatening up front. Leroy Griffiths won the game with a fantastic individual run followed by a nice flick on from Tags to Holloway who fired home. A poor refereeing performance almost ruined the game after Watson was sent off for a second bookable offence, he was only booked when the referee realised who is was. Ken Charlery had another poor game and we looked much better once Leroy came on.

Farnborough Town 1 Scarborough 1 - 14/09/2002 - What an absolute load of rubbish that was, we looked like we played for the draw. We had few ideas going forward and Ken unfortunately doesn't seem to be the solution to our problems up front.

Farnborough Town 1 Dagenham & Redbridge 0 - 31/08/2002 - A great defence performance, especially from Rodwell and Pennock frustrated the Dagenham side. Tags got us the 3 points with a stunning strike near the end. Unfortunately Justin went off injured after being hacked down. Even the referee (12 mins+ of injury time!) couldn't stop us getting our deserved points.

Farnborough Town 3 Halifax Town 0 - 24/08/2002 - We always seem to win when the Reading Festival is on. Our first three points thanks to Lenny, Dean and Ken with his first 'boro goal. An improved performance from Tuesday and much better than against Hereford was built upon a solid defensive performance. Rodwell is looking a quality signing and the whole defensive unit looked much more solid.

Hereford United 2 Farnborough Town 1 - 17/08/2002 - Poor performance over in 'Wales' led to the inevitable result. To be honest Hereford weren't much better. Never seen metal bars in a tea bar before.

Pre-season Friendlies

Official Squad Photo Shoot - 13/08/2002 - Photographs from the photo shoot and from the subsequent training session. For the full squad pictures and pen pics click on Players above.

South Coast Tour - 10+11/08/2002 - When they weren't partying Farnborough played a couple of games of football beating Weymouth 1-0 and losing on penalties to Bashley after drawing 2-2 in normal time. Both games were fairly poor and seemed more exercises in fitness than anything else. Not much reward for the awful traffic, bad weather and lack of hot food at Weymouth. I just wish we could have a clubhouse as good as Bashley's.

Farnborough Town 1 Leyton Orient 0 - 04/08/2002 - Farnborough win a fairly typical pre-season game (i.e. dull) with a Rocky penalty. Following an uninteresting first half the home team raised their game and deserved the win. Charlery could probably have had a hat-trick with better finishing.

Crawley Town 1 Farnborough Town 0 - 27/07/2002 - Farnborough probably just about shaded the game but Crawley made the better chances and got the win they deserved with a goal five minutes from time. Ken Charlery made his debut and whilst showing a few good touch's clearly wasn't match fit.

Farnborough Town 1 Portsmouth XI 1 - 24/07/2002 - both teams worked hard to grind out a fairly dull result. A fairly strong Pompey side gave Graham's side a good test. Whilst few chances were created Tony scored a cheeky free kick whilst the Pompey keeper was busy organising his wall.

Bishop's Stortford 1 Farnborough Town 6 - 20/07/2002 - goal feast in our opening friendly game against the Ryman Premiership newboys. Stortford played quite a few trialists and we had a strong looking lineout throughout the game, though Ken didn't get a run out. The other new signings looked promising and we had a couple of our own trialists on show as well.

Season 2001/02

Farnborough Town 4 Scarborough 2 - 13/04/2002 - another good win takes us to fifth in the table with the help of a Chris Piper hat-trick

Farnborough Town 4 Northwich Victoria 1 - 01/04/2002 - yet more goals from our "wing-ed" wonders

Hayes 0 Farnborough Town 3 - 30/03/2002 - revenge on Hayes

Farnborough Town 6 Stevenage 1 - 23/03/2002 - absolutely STUFFED Stevanage, what a great game.

Farnborough Town 1 Hayes 2 - 20/10/2001 - great start followed by the worst performance of the season. Fall-out left Lenny, Joff, Jones, Darlo and Hodges transfer listed.

Stalybridge Celtic 1 Farnborough Town 1 - 01/09/2001 - dull game, point saved by Lenny though

Farnborough Town 2 Barnet FC 1 - 27/08/2001 - glorious weather and a fantastic game as a 10 men 'boro give a great second half performance to take all three points

Southport 2 Farnborough Town 5 - 25/08/2001 - fantastic game and result. Shame about the Southport officials, therefore only shots from half the game :-(
